Battle Beast is an incredible gem that seems to have been forgotten by everyone...
Released in 1995 by 7th Level, Inc., the game gained many fans. This colorful, beautifully animated (for 1995 standards) beat 'em up game stood out from its competitors (Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter) with its completely hilarious approach to face punching.
Surprisingly, the game even has its own story. Although it is as simple as the construction of a short fighting stick, it exists nonetheless. A certain Toadman, using his minions (evil, ugly, and generally hellish frogs) plans to take control of the world.
I should mention that the game was released on a CD and has many funny animations, such as "henchmen" terrorizing the city. I won't spoil anything, but some of these videos can still make you smile today.
In the game, we control adorable plush toys (at least that's what they look like...) that transform into bloodthirsty beasts when a button is pressed. The plush and battle versions of our "fighter" have a different set of moves, so skillfully switching between forms will undoubtedly tip the scales in our favor. The graphics of the game are done correctly. The arenas are beautifully drawn, and our heroes have a lot of animation frames. Unfortunately, it's tough to say that their movement is fluid today.
As if that wasn't enough, our beasts perform an attack when we press a direction button and the attack button together. As you can easily see, this is not the perfect solution and often leads to moves we didn't even intend to perform.
The game's authors also thought of a mini-game that actually has a huge impact before a fight. Unlike the competition, in Battle Beast, we have to reach the arena ourselves, using channels. It's worth doing it before our opponent, as we then have more time to look for secret rooms hiding useful bonuses in the fight."
