Today I would like to present to you the game Eco Fighters, which was passionately played almost thirty years ago on arcade machines.
Eco Fighters is a representative of "flying shooters", of which there were really a lot on arcade machines. Eco Fighters stands out because it approached the idea of "shooting everything that flies towards us" in a slightly different way than the competition. In the game, we control a small spacecraft whose main weapon is placed on a special arm. This arm can move around our vehicle, allowing us to direct fire in any direction in the game. Additionally, the aforementioned cannon is resistant to our opponents' fire, so during the game, we constantly have to choose between shooting down opponents and protecting our own "backside".
There is no artificial intelligence in this game - opponents fly like on a string, but believe me, the lack of behavior is compensated by their numbers and rapid fire. So, it's a standard in this type of game 😉
We receive several types of weapons for exterminating opponents, but in fact, they do not differ in any more noticeable way. We can upgrade each of the collected guns by collecting diamonds that drop from opponents.
The storyline in the game is as shallow as a puddle in the summer. A certain Kernel Goyolk is extremely exploiting the resources of visited planets, destroying their ecosystem. Our task is to prevent this by smashing his hordes of workers and minions operating giant machines, which serve as bosses at the end of the levels. In the game, we destroy opponents on 6 stages where we fly around and even swim, as one of the stages takes place underwater. Although it does not change the gameplay in any way, it certainly provides some variety.
The game was released on the CPS-2 system by Capcom, so we should expect a polished title. And that is indeed the case. The 2D graphics are still pleasing to the eye, and the level design as well as the enemies are really interesting. There is no time to complain about the gameplay, as the game constantly throws hordes of enemy units at us. The stages in the game are quite short but very intense. Eco Fighters does not allow for a moment of respite, and we must constantly focus on what is happening on the screen. From time to time, the game will also surprise us with a demanding mini-boss.
