The Lost Vikings (1993)

Today I would like to present to you another game that not many people remember. That's The Lost Vikings straight from Blizzard 😉 Surprisingly (for those times...) the title has a pretty cool and funny storyline. A galactic villain, the evil Tomator, attacks our heroes' village and kidnaps our trio onto his ship. And our task is to help them get out of trouble. In the game, we will control three Vikings. Each of our heroes has a set of skills with which he must support his companions. Erik is like the Scandinavian equivalent of Usain Bolt. He is athletic, so he can jump and is much faster than the other characters. Baleog is a sword and bow master, so his task is to "grind" enemies. The last hero, Olaf, with the help of his shield, can block incoming projectiles or... use it as a parachute, thus avoiding falling from greater heights. Such functionality of a heavy wooden shield contradicts the laws of physics, but it is extremely useful 😉

During our adventure, we will move not only on the villain's ship but also visit Egypt and... I won't spoil it 😉

What distinguishes The Lost Vikings is the fact that throughout the game, the trio of heroes is always available. The player's task is to use the special abilities of this trio to obtain keys or items necessary to complete the level. The stages are quite short, but to move on and get the whole trio to the exit of the level, which is not always achieved on the first try.

In the game, we have to "get through" 37 stages, each of which is more difficult than the previous one and requires a specific approach to pass it. Constant switching between heroes, using collected power-ups, or even the order of actions. You will often see the screen where our Vikings bid farewell to their companion departing to Valhalla and... resurrecting right after that...

Fortunately, we have an unlimited number of continues, and we will not experience the classic screen ominously announcing the end of our adventure.

As for the gameplay itself, the game is still very playable. Younger players may be discouraged by the game's difficulty level (apart from the graphics, of course). The Lost Vikings is a challenging and puzzle-heavy game, but fortunately, there are many gameplay videos of the game available on social media platforms, showing what needs to be done at each level. Personally, I stopped at level 12 without them ;)
