The game Ugh! was released in 1992 by PlayByte. In the game, we play as a caveman who had a great business idea and... built the world's first taxi - a helicopter.
As a prehistoric "cab driver," we shuttle passengers between stops. However, our helicopter is very delicate, and colliding with obstacles results in losing a life. In addition to terrain obstacles, prehistoric creatures flying "back and forth" also hinder us from reaching the right locations.
To make matters worse, we can knock our passengers into the water (if we get too close), and we have to rescue them (if they fall into the water, we can pull them out). Our helicopter also has limited endurance, which we can replenish by collecting fruit from trees (first, we have to knock the fruit down with a stone - there's always one lying around the level, and to throw a stone at a tree, you have to press Ctrl). The game is not particularly easy and has many gameplay elements to master. The first 5-10 levels can be completed in one go, but as you progress, it gets more challenging. There are 69 levels to complete, which can be done solo or in two-player mode, where you can sabotage each other. Co-op on one keyboard is always more enjoyable than playing online. Anyone who used the vaccine trick during the game (a hack from the days when I was young 😉) certainly knows what I mean.
The game's mechanics have not aged, and it's surprising that no game developer for Android has utilized them. Ugh! practically begs for a remake on phones.
There's not much to say about the music (remember, the game was released in 1992) - you'll hear some "plinking" sounds during the game, and that's about it. I won't evaluate the game's graphics either. As a typical "Janusz" would say, "it was good back in the day."
The best way to play the game is to use DosBox, and it runs smoothly without any problems.
With this post, I want to start another section on this blog, namely retro. Here, I'll describe the most exciting games, not only from DOS but also from old consoles/arcades. I hope my "memories" will be readable in some way 😉.
