Time to dust off another game from the so-called "arcades," namely Violent Storm.
Violent Storm is a classic beat'em up game that was abundant in arcades. However, this title could swallow up coins like few others due to the atmosphere that poured out of the arcade machine's screen.
The plot, as (almost) in every beat'em up game, is rudimentary. In the year 1990, after the end of World War III, people are trying to rebuild the community and cities destroyed by the war. Unfortunately, in the post-apocalyptic world, there is a gang led by Lord Geld. The gangster does not like the idea of losing influence to a liberal society, so he sends his minions to sow terror, horror, and whatever else comes to their empty heads, like hypermarkets during a pandemic 😉
In the midst of this chaos, there are three heroes in this game who have decided to stand up for the law and help the oppressed. And when Lord Geld's right-hand man, the notorious Red Freddy, kidnaps the beautiful (for 2D graphics, at least) Sheena, the trio of friends decides to rescue her and (by the way) beat up the entire gang of Lord Geld.
In short, someone kidnaps a girl, and our task is to rescue her from the clutches of the "villain." The plot has been repeated hundreds of times...
To choose, as I mentioned before, we have three characters to choose from. Interestingly, they differ in strength and speed when it comes to delivering punches to opponents' faces. The most well-balanced and beloved by most players was Clyde. It was easy to master playing as him and "more or less" manage to get through each stage. Boris, an Afro-American pumped up on Chinese meth, was usually chosen when the blond guy was already taken. Due to being the strongest character in the game, he could lift and carry opponents, and had many attacks that knocked opponents into the air, making him perfect for cornering opponents on the screen.
The third option was Kyle, who was the fastest of the three, but was really hard to master because of one of his attacks that blocked him in place for a few seconds. Adding to that the numerous agile enemies and the fact that bosses could counter his moves, his survivability was really poor.
Unfortunately, the enemies are not very varied. During the game, we encounter only a few opponents who, although they have their "enhanced" versions, require the same strategy to defeat them. The bosses in the game are impressive, though. Each of them requires a different fighting strategy and is really demanding.
The soundtrack in this game is a real masterpiece and I remember it to this day. King Records even released a 2-disc soundtrack of the game back in 1994, but nowadays it's a rare find and you won't even find it on torrents. ;)
