Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa (1992)

Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa is a children's animated series that is relatively unknown in Poland. Personally, I had no idea about it until writing this article 😉. Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa is also a game released by Konami in 1992, and that's what we will focus on 😉

The plot of the game is quite simple. As a result of radiation, cattle (and others) mutated, acquiring humanoid traits and forming a full-fledged society in the Wild West. As it is in any community, there are always outlaws and people who have to protect it. Our task is to guide the good guys 😉.

In the game, we have a choice of 4 characters: Cowlorado Kid, Dakota Dude, Marshall Moo Montana, and Buffalo Bull. Unfortunately, the differences between the characters are purely visual. No matter what our character holds in their hand, we deal exactly the same amount of damage. I think this standardization was due to the fact that up to four players could play at once. This way, disputes between players in front of the arcade machine about who will control the "better" character were avoided.

Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa is a really simple shooter, where our only task is to push forward and send the "baddies" to the other world. As in simple shooters, we can collect various power-ups that strengthen our character. And we collect them from... flying chickens.

The controls in the game are incredibly simple. We only have a choice of shooting and jumping, pressing both of these buttons at the same time results in our character performing a "ram". From time to time, we have to detonate TNT, and that's basically all there is to have fun. As I mentioned, the game was based on an animated series, so the game developers put a lot of effort into animating the characters. Even by today's standards, it can be pleasing to the eye. The game's sound is at a really good level, the background music doesn't loop too quickly and doesn't tire our ears. It's just an old Konami game - made perfectly, without any unnecessary frills... (unlike today...)

The arcade machine with this game stood in the neighborhood "arcade" for several years and, due to its humorous approach to gameplay, was constantly crowded. After all, we don't control another super-commando or some hunk, but a well-animated little bull whose gun "swells" before the shot. To this day, it has its charm 😉
